AUGUSTA, Maine — A post from a fake Facebook account mistakenly spread news that a Maine state representative had been found dead.
The post, which was shared by Maine House Republicans, implied Rep. Karen Gerrish, of Lebanon, was found dead in a home and that guns were taken from the home.
The page “Maine police & fire alerts” has been the subject of criticism for years.House Republicans’ spokesman Rob Poindexter said Gerrish was shaken when she learned of her reported death.
Last week, Maine State Police put a warning out saying posts on the page were fake.
“It’s my understanding this is not an isolated incident of bogus info from the person running this Facebook page,” Poindexter said. “I advise people to ignore and unfollow.”
Gerrish is a school teacher when not working in the Legislature, Poindexter said.
“On top of the fact her family and friends were impacted by this, imagine the reaction of her students as well as the faculty and staff at the school where she works,” Poindexter said.
A Facebook page called “Maine Police Fire Alerts” has been confused as being the page providing fake information. State police said they have no problem with that page.
