WELD, Maine — Maine State Police said a 19-year-old was killed in a car crash Thursday night in Weld.
Griffyn Smith, of Dixfield, was killed, police said.
The car was being driven by Ethyn Buotte, 18, of Dixfield, police said. He and an unnamed 17-year-old girl were hurt. Both are students at Dirigo High School in Dixfield, police said.
Originally, police had said Smith was a student at the school and was due to graduate next week. This information was incorrect. Smith graduated from Dirigo High School in 2016, Maine State Police said later Friday morning.
Police said Buotte lost control of the car on West Side Road around 11:30 p.m. The car then hit a tree and rolled over.
The two injured teenagers were being treated for injuries at a hospital in Rumford.
Police said speed appears to have been a factor in the crash.
No charges have been filed, but the district attorney was contacted, police said.
There were counselors available at the high school for students and staff Friday, school officials said.
