Rory McIlroy makes a strong comeback and competes fiercely at the Arnold Palmer Invitational

Rory McIlroy stormed into contention at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, sitting just two shots off the lead.

McIlroy started off the week with an opening round 73 but has been flawless since that point.

The world number three made the turn two under for the day with birdies on four and six.

And the four-time major winner birdied the 10th and 16th holes to shoot an impressive four-under-par round.

McIlroy currently sits two shots off leader Viktor Hovland with the Norwegian shooting a sizzling six-under-par 66.

As too did Tyrrell Hatton, a previous winner of the even who is seven-under-par for the round.

Padraig Harrington is one-under-par while Seamus Power and Shane Lowry sit near the bottom at six-over-par.
