BOSTON — Shira Schoenberg, Statehouse reporter for The Republican and MassLive.com, will receive the 2018 Excellence in Legal Journalism Award from the Massachusetts Bar Association in a ceremony next month.
The annual award is presented to “reporters whose coverage of the legal system in Massachusetts best reflects the commitment to truth and justice shared by both the bar and the press,” the association said.
“There are few reporters who write about the intersection between the State House and the courthouse as well and as clearly as Shira Schoenberg,” said Martin W. Healy, the association’s chief legal counsel and chief operating officer. “Whether covering newsworthy trials or the inner workings of criminal justice reform, Shira has definitely earned a place among the top legal and governmental journalists in Massachusetts today.”
“In Shira Schoenberg, The Republican and MassLive have one of the best governmental reporters in the country,” The Republican Executive Editor Wayne Phaneuf said. “Whether writing about legal matters, Statehouse politics, health care, education, the intricacies of complicated legislation, public policy or political campaigns, she writes clear, comprehensive articles that help readers digest the impact of these issues on their daily lives.”
Schoenberg joined The Republican in 2012, covering Massachusetts government and developments in the law. She was ranked one of the best state politics reporters in the nation in 2015 by Chris Cillizza of The Washington Post. A selection of her stories appears below.
She previously covered the 2012 New Hampshire presidential primary for The Boston Globe and New Hampshire state government for the Concord Monitor.
Schoenberg has a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University and is a member of the Massachusetts Trial Court’s Public Access to Court Records standing committee.
The Massachusetts Bar Association’s awards ceremony will be held at the Marriott Long Wharf Hotel in Boston at 5:30 p.m. May 10. It is sponsored by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly.
The event also will feature awards for up-and-coming lawyers, excellence in pro bono representation, paralegals, marketing and firm administration.
