President Donald Trump spent Christmas weekend indulging in some of his favorite activities: playing golf, enjoying his luxurious Mar-a-Lago resort in West Palm Beach, Florida, and using Twitter to mock and condemn his adversaries.
He and his wife Melania talked by teleconference to members of the U.S. military deployed overseas to express the nation’s gratitude for their service, and they chatted with children about what they wanted from Santa. On Christmas night, Trump wrote on Twitter, “I hope everyone is having a great Christmas, then tomorrow it’s back to work in order to Make America Great Again (which is happening faster than anyone anticipated).”
But on Christmas Eve, he went negative as he blasted the media for promoting “fake news.” Trump drew criticism for retweeting a doctored photo of himself with splatter, resembling blood, on the sole of his left shoe surrounding the letters “CNN,” one of the news outlets that he regularly stomps because they are supposedly biased against him.
This prompted Walter Shaub, Jr., former director of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, to write on Twitter, “The wannabe autocrat just retweeted an image depicting CNN’s blood on the sole of his shoe. These colicky tweets reveal he’s hurting this weekend. They make him (and our country) look weak.” Joe Walsh, a conservative radio show host and former Republican member of the House from Illinois, tweeted, “Mr. President, put your phone down. It’s Christmas. Quit attacking people on Twitter. Grow up sir. Have you no sense of decency? Go spend time with your family.”
He found time to tweet a condemnation of outgoing FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe. “How can FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, the man in charge, along with leakin’ James Comey, of the Phony Hillary Clinton investigation (including her 33,000 illegally deleted emails) be given $700,000 for wife’s campaign by Clinton Puppets during investigation?” Trump was referring to news reports that Jill McCabe, Andrew McCabe’s wife, received donations from Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s political action committee when she ran for the state Senate as a Democrat. McAuliffe, a Democrat, is a longtime adviser to and fund-raiser for Bill and Hillary Clinton.
Trump also wrote on Twitter, “The Stock Market is setting record after record and unemployment is at a 17 year low. So many things accomplished by the Trump Administration, perhaps more than any other President in first year. Sadly, will never be reported correctly by the Fake News Media!”
Trump played golf Saturday and Sunday. He paid for Christmas dinner at Mar-a-Lago for military members and law enforcement officials, White House officials said.
