SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A special baseball league began it’s season Sunday.
The Miracle League of Western Massachusetts brings together players of all abilities, and aims to remove the barriers that keep kids with disabilities off the field.
Sunday morning, the organization held it’s season opener in a new location with nearly 50 players.
Springfield College’s Archie Allen field is a first-of-its-kind project. It features a cushioned surface that makes it accessible for players with special needs to get from base to base.
Ernie Fitzell of Holyoke said, “They don’t always get accepted everywhere else. We want to accept everybody, and we let everybody play whether they have a cognitive disability, a physical disability or anything else. They deserve to play baseball too. Everyone does.”
The Miracle League of Western Massachusetts was founded in 2015.
